Designing Residential Dreams with Big Sky

Sponsored Content provided by Jennifer Kraner - President & Principal Interior Designer, Big Sky Design Inc.

When I think about what makes a residential design project successful, I always come back to one thing: It has to feel like the people who live there.

At Big Sky Interior Design, we’ve had the privilege of designing an incredible range of homes throughout greater Wilmington, from fully custom homes along our coastal beaches to high-end contemporary homes and historic downtown properties. That variety is one of the things I love most about designing in this area.

No two clients are alike, and no two homes should be, either.

Sometimes a client comes to us with a very clear vision. They’ve saved photographs, researched finishes, and know exactly where they want to go. Other times, they simply have a feeling. They know they want their home to be beautiful, comfortable, and special, but aren’t sure how to articulate what that looks like.

That’s where our expertise comes in.

We have an incredible team at Big Sky, and each person brings different talents, experience, and perspectives to the table. Once we get an understanding of what our clients love and how they want their home to feel, we begin thinking conceptually and consider the bigger picture: How will all of these elements work together? What story are we telling? How can we bring our clients’ vision to life in a way that feels uniquely theirs?

That design-driven approach is a big part of what sets Big Sky apart. We bring an incredible network of industry resources to every project, drawing from a worldwide showroom of products as well as talented local businesses right here in Wilmington.

One of my favorite parts of the process is our first presentation with a client. We create a visual design concept that gives them a glimpse of where we’re headed, supported by actual selections – perhaps a beautiful fabric for dining chairs, distinctive tile for a bathroom, an amazing light fixture or a piece of furniture that becomes the starting point for an entire room.

And then we listen.

Maybe something resonates immediately. Maybe something doesn’t. Either way, that feedback is valuable. We want people to feel comfortable telling us what they love – and what they don’t. Our feelings aren’t hurt when an idea doesn’t work. That’s how we refine the vision together.

There’s more to our job than simply listening. The design process also allows us to find the unexpected – those unique elements that make a space feel truly curated and bring our clients a sense of happiness when the project is complete.

That all happens with a lot of work behind the scenes. Our project coordinators, lead designers and assistant designers order samples, develop presentations, price selections, communicate with vendors, coordinate fabricators and installers, work with builders, and troubleshoot the countless details that bring a project together.

There is a singular joy in revealing the finished project to a client. That moment of surprise, followed by seeing their expressions of delight, is sublime. When clients see their dreams realized in a space they may once have had difficulty imagining, it reminds me why my team and I do what we do.

And the emotions of "the big reveal" shouldn’t be fleeting. Spending time in and using new spaces – whether it’s an updated powder room, luxurious living room or unexpected pantry – should continue to bring moments of joy.

Because thoughtfully designed spaces should do more than look beautiful. From patterns, colors and lighting to furnishings and fabrics, every detail should uplift the people who call that space home and set the tone for a life well-lived.
